PostHeaderIcon Draft 2012

While I don’t have past data, except for last year, it looks good that where two Mormons were drafted into professional baseball last year, this year there were three. And, perhaps more interesting, where last year’s draftees were both BYU players, only one of this year’s three played at BYU. The other two have just graduated from high school and have commitments to play at colleges.

So far, only the BYU player, Austin Hall, has signed and is playing in the minors (see yesterday’s weekly update). The others apparently haven’t signed yet, but whether that means they will play in college, or just that their advisors have suggested they hold off, looking for a better bonus, isn’t clear.

In any case, here are the Mormons that were drafted this year:

  • Willie Ethington, 17th round #541 overall, Boston Red Sox
Mountain View HS, AZ; RHP, R/R, HS, 6’03” 190lbs DOB: 12/08/93 (has a scholarship commitment to AZ State)
  • Austin Hall, 33rd round #1025 overall, Milwaukee Brewers
BYU; RHP, R/R, SR, 6’04” 210lbs DOB: 09/21/88 (signed and playing with the AZL Brewers of the Arizona League)
  • Connor Williams, 36th round #1099 overall, Oakland Athletics
Bingham HS, UT; RHP, R/R, HS, 6’03” 190lbs DOB: 03/18/94 (has a scholarship commitment to the University of Utah)

Of course, it is possible that there are other Mormons who were drafted and I haven’t been able to tell that they are Mormon. If you have any information that will assist in this, please let me know.

Taylor Mangum (UVU) was not selected in the draft, but the returned-missionary RHP signed with the Brewers on June 11th. He has pitched two games in the Arizona League: 1.59 ERA, 5.2 IP, 2.118 WHIP, 0.308 BAA.

Jeff Gelalich – Reds 1st Rd 57th overall – All American at UCLA – Golden Spikes nominee. Brother Matt (CF @ Pepperdine) now serving mission to Chile.

Bonita, thank you for the information. I’ll do some research and try to add him to my list of Mormons in baseball.

  • kent says:

Bonita, I was able to verify that Gelalich is LDS. He has signed with the Reds and is currently playing in the rookie Pioneer League with the Billings Mustangs.

Thanks again for passing on the information.
