PostHeaderIcon Spring Training Update: 4 March 2013

While it is perhaps not wise to make too much of performance in spring training, especially at the very beginning, the early results from several Mormons in baseball are quite encouraging. And leading the pack is last year’s National League MVP Rookie of the Year, Bryce Harper, who is hitting over .500. But the encouraging results are not just those from Harper, but also from a trio of Mormons who play in the Oakland A’s organization (two of whom were added to our lists just this past week!)

Adam Rosales has the highest batting average of the three, hitting .444 over 9 at bats (the fewest of the three). Rosales bounced between the majors and minors last year, so his performance may help him get back to the majors in the coming year. Next is Shane Peterson, a prospect who seems most likely to start at AAA this year, and who spent most of last year at that level. Peterson seems red hot, hitting .421 over 21 at bats with a home run and three rbis. The last of the three is Eric Sogard, who has gone 6 for 17 (.353) so far in spring training. Sogard was a backup short stop for the As last year, appearing in about 35 games and hitting just .167. Both Peterson and Sogard were unknown to us last year.

Among pitchers the best performances so far are probably those of Matt Lindstrom and Mitch Talbot, who have both reached 0.00 eras in 3 innings of work.
