PostHeaderIcon At least 4 Mormons in Post-Season: Majors Update 22 September 2013

Four Mormon players are on teams that have clinched a berth in this year’s playoffs, and another 5 could still make it — and two almost certainly will. Jacoby Ellsbury (Boston Red Sox), Doug Fister (Detroit Tigers), Elliot Johnson (Atlanta Braves) and Eric Sogard (Oakland Athletics) will all experience the post-season. In addition, John Buck and Kyle Farnsworth (both with the Pittsburg Pirates) are very likely to also make the post season. And Jeremy Guthrie (Kansas City Royals), Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals) and Adam Rosales (Texas Rangers), all still have a chance of seeing the post season, if their teams win and others lose.

Despite the fact that their teams are not headed to the post season, Roy Halladay and Matt Lindstrom still turned in the best pitching performances last week. Halladay earned a 1.50 era, giving up just 4 hits and one run, but he wasn’t particularly sharp, striking out just 2 while walking 3 and hitting one batter. Relief pitcher Lindstrom was much better, striking out 2 over 2 2/3rds innings and bringing his season era down to 2.88.

At the plate Eric Sogard, one of those headed to the post-season, was strong last week, despite few plate appearances, going 3 for 8 with 2 runs, 2 rbis, 2 walks and a stolen base. Similarly, the Atlanta Braves’ Elliot Johnson was strong, and saw more plate appearances despite the return of Dan Uggla from the DL. Johnson hit .286 last week, scoring 2 runs and swiping 2 bases, bringing his season stolen base total to 21 — tied for 25th in the majors despite his backup role, which has limited him to about 1/3rd the plate appearances of every day players.

Josh Johnson remains on the DL, and will thorugh the rest of the season, while Jacoby Ellsbury, who technically is not on the DL, hasn’t played since September 5th. Ellsbury is expected to return for the Red Sox’ last series the end of this week, and, of course, for the post-season.
