Weekly Player Update: July 16
Sometimes coming back from a break is a good thing; other times, not so much. It might seem like a break should help players get their heads together, but it can also get them out of the habits and the way of thinking that gives them success. At least that seems plausible to me. And after the all-star break some players did better, and others worse. But that isn’t very different from most weeks.
Still, there are some remarkable ups and downs. After weeks of poor play, Darwin Barney is suddenly hitting .400 and John Buck hit over .200 for a change. Kyle Farnsworth was lights out again, after a rocky return from the DL. And, back from the DL, Jacoby Ellsbury was back to his old form, hitting .429.
On the down side, the whole All Star Game experience didn’t seem to help Bryce Harper who, after playing like, well, a rookie in the midsummer classic, played even worse since the break. If he hits 1 for 12 for much longer we’ll have to call it a slump.
He has company: Jeremy Guthrie gave another poor start, making me wonder how long the Rockie’s will keep him around. The Rays’ Elliott Johnson hit just .200 for the week, and his brother, Josh, gave up 5 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Marlins.
In the minors, the Iron Pigs’ Tyson Brummett, who has been fantastic so far this year, posted one of the worst era’s for a single appearance I’ve seen: 135.00!! That’s 5 earned runs in just 1/3rd of an inning! Fortunately he was pulled before he damaged his record further — his era for the year so far is still just 2.83.
He is joined by others who are struggling: Bryan Harper, whose 9.00 era for an inning’s work still decreased his era for the year so far; Mitch Maier, who is 0 for 3 since being sent down to AAA from the majors; and Jordan Whatcott, who earned a 54.00 era for 2/3rds of an inning of work.
Adam Rosales is still looking ok, although his average dropped to .200 this week, but he still managed to get 2 runs and 2 rbi, which help make his case to return to the majors. Cale Iorg also had a good week, for a change, hitting .333 and scoring a run, which raised his batting average for the season to .171. And Clayton Mortensen continues to make the case that the Red Sox’s should put him in the major’s permanently — this time with 5.0 innings of 0.00 era ball, although he lost one of his two games this past week due to an error.

My dad just sent me a link to your site. He is your cousin Kelly! Anyway, couple of quick comments.
Firstly, Taylor Cole and I were mission companions in Toronto for 6 months. Secondly, I was a bat boy for The Arizona Diamondbacks in Spring Training for 2 years and I am almost positive Eric Byrnes is not LDS, however, I am also almost positive JD and Stephen Drew are. My reasoning is I have never heard Stephen Drew swear. He always said “heck” and was about the nicest guy you could meet. I haven’t been able to confirm that the Drew brothers are for a fact LDS but I have heard that JD was from someone else as well. Nice site by the way!
Chance, its great to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by. I’ll have to send you an email.
The information about Taylor Cole is great. I’m becoming more and more impressed with him. Even though he hasn’t had a lot of time on the field yet, that 0.64 era looks very good. How much longer can he post stats like that before they move him up?
I should take Eric Byrnes off the list above because he retired. At this point it seems unlikely that he is or was Mormon.
As for the Drew brothers, I’m afraid that’s not enough to add them as even possibilities — To include someone here as Mormon, I really need some evidence that either they consider themselves Mormon, or that they or their family were members at one time. Whether they swear or not isn’t relevant, I’m afraid (after all, J. Golden Kimball was a General Authority!)
Since the Drew brothers are from Georgia (according to MLB data), it seems more likely that they good Baptist boys whose mama taught them not to swear — but I have no evidence on that either.
You’ve made it clear that I need to put together a page here on the site that indicates something about what evidence is needed to include someone as a Mormon player.
FWIW, I’ve added a page on how we define who is Mormon — http://mormonbaseball.com/mlb/defining-who-is-mormon/
I hope it clears up why we include some of those we do.
Thanks for the clarification! Taylor Cole is scheduled to pitch tonight. The main worry I think the team has with him is consistency. Last season he was fresh off his mission and his arm had gone from hitting 95 consistently to about 91 mph. That being said his control last season wasn’t up to par. I know he was hoping to be up in Lansing this year and so far he is proving himself. Also, about that ERA, he has only pitched 14 innings before tonight’s game so that could be part of the reason for holding him back.
Yep, 14 innings is a bit thin. I do hope he can keep that level of pitching up, though.
Well, I lied. He isn’t pitching today. They changed last minute…
