Raptors lose championship with Cone on the bench: Minors Update Sept. 15
Rookie league pitcher Derek Cone again sat on the bench while his team, the Ogden Raptors, lost the final game of their series with the Missoula Osprey and the Pioneer League Championship. Meanwhile, the other Mormon remaining in the minor league playoffs, Mitch Maier, was 1 for 4 with 2 strike outs in the Omaha Storm Chasers loss.
The Storm Chasers lost to the Reno Aces 3-0, largely on the superb pitching of Joe Martinez, who blanked the Storm Chasers over 7 innings and struck out 7. Despite also striking out twice, Maier is among the team leaders in the playoffs, hitting .333 and producing 3 home runs. The Storm Chasers are down to must win games now—a loss gives the PCL championship to the Aces.
Here’s a run-down of the remaining Mormons in the minors who are on teams that will play in the league championships:
AAA teams:
Each of the two AAA leagues have league conference playoffs, championship series, and then the champions of each league then meet in a single game AAA championship, scheduled for September 18th in Durham, North Carolina.
- Mitch Maier, Omaha Storm Chasers, Pacific Coast League, American Northern Conference Champions
* Storm Chasers down 2-1 in the 5-game League championship series against the Reno Aces Sept. 11-12, 14-16.
Rookie teams:
The winners of the first half play the winner of the second half in each division to determine the division champion. The division champions then meet in a league championship.
- Derek Cone, Ogden Raptors, Pioneer League, South Division champion
* Raptors lost to the Missoula Osprey 2 games to 1 in the 3-game series Sept. 11, 13 & 14.
I will try to keep us all up-to-date with the status of these Mormon minor leaguers over the next couple weeks. Enjoy the minor league post season!
