Spring Training Update: 11 March 2013
The hottest Mormon player in baseball, Shane Peterson, remained hot last week, hitting .545 over 11 at bats with a home run and 3 rbis, continuing an impressive spring training for the Oakland Athletics’ prospect. If Peterson keeps this up, its hard to imagine that the Athletics won’t bring him up during the year, or perhaps even make space for him on the starting team. Of course, these decisions have as much to do with the quality and experience of the other outfielders that the Athletics can draw on, so well have to wait and see.
Peterson’s performance is nearly matched by that of Bryce Harper, who continues to hit like he’s trying to prove something. Harper was 5 for 16 last week (.313) and his spring training average is .438 with 2 home runs, 5 runs scored and 4 rbis in 32 at bats. Of course, Harper doesn’t need to work to make the team, but with Harper you get the feeling that he is working for higher goals.
Other standouts in spring training include John Buck, who went 4 for 8 last week, bringing the Mets’ catcher’s average up to .316 so far, and Josh Johnson, who has won two games and sports an era of 1.17. Great stuff!
