Fister Starting Strong: Spring Training Update 23 March 2014
The Washington National’s Doug Fister has been very strong in his few innings of work this Spring Training, despite working through elbow inflammation that delayed his work. Fister has thrown for 5.2 innings and given up just 1 earned run and 1 walk while striking out 6. This past week he worked for 3.2 scoreless innings. So far he has the best record among Mormon pitchers albeit with some of the fewest innings of work.
Among batters, the outstanding performance of the week was from the A’s Eric Sogard, who was 4 for 9 (.444) with 2 runs and 2 rbis. That brought his spring training average up to .244. But that isn’t the best performance by a Mormon baseball player at the plate. Surprisingly, the Cleveland Indians’ Elliot Johnson still maintains a .333 average over 45 at bats, with 8 rbis and 2 home runs, a strong performance for a utility infielder with a career .218 average. On the other hand, Johnson seems to do well in Spring Training, with a career .298 average during the pre-season.
