Law Steps It Up: Minors Update 21 April 2014
After starting the season slow, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ Adam Law stepped up his performance last week to something like what he did last year, his first after being drafted. Law was 9 for 20 (.450) in 6 games, with 7 runs scored, 5 rbis, 7 walks and 2 stolen bases. And Law raised his batting average for the season to .298, while planting a foot among the statistics leaders in batting average, on-base percentage and in stolen bases. Its the kind of performance Law was known for last year, when he tore up first the Arizona rookie league, and then the Pioneer league, leading to his promotion to the California League (A+) instead of an A-level league with those who were drafted the same time he was. Is it too much to expect him to reach AA by the end of the year?
Law wasn’t the only strong Mormon player at the plate. The Beloit Snappers’ Jaycob Brugman was 4 for 10 last week (.400), improving his season average to .238. But Brugman hasn’t seen many plate appearances this season, and his performance in general still trails other Mormons in the Midwest League (A), such as Marcus Littlewood, who leads the league in batting average and appears in the top 25 in 8 different categories.
Among pitchers, the standout last week was Adam Miller, who gave up just 1 hit and struck out 4 in a 3-inning outing. Miller’s era so far is just 1.42 (tied for 5th in the Midwest League) and his WHIP is 0.87, 4th in the league. Not far behind Miller is veteran Tyson Brummett, who is starting the season in AA for the 4th year in a row, reaching AAA each time, and making a brief appearance in the majors in 2012. Brummett’s era so far this season is just 0.56, leading the Southern League. But despite only giving up 1 run so far this year, Brummett has a 1-1 win-loss record. Perhaps if he can keep up this level he will quickly reach AAA and get another shot at the majors this year. Meanwhile, Boone Whiting continues his strong performance in the AAA Pacific Coast League, while he waits for an opening on the Cardinals’ pitching staff.
