Lindstrom Looking Good: Majors Update 11 May 2014
Earning his 5th save of the season last week, the White Sox’s Matt Lindstrom is looking like a solid closer at the moment. In his two one-inning appearances last week he gave up just 1 hit and 1 walk — for a 1.00 WHIP and 0.00 era. For the season his era is down to 2.81 in 16 innings of relief and 8 save opportunities. But Lindstrom isn’t expected to keep up this level of performance for the whole year.
Lindstrom’s performance is perhaps similar to the other active Mormon reliever, the Mets’ Kyle Farnsworth. Farnsworth also had a strong week, earning a 2.70 era in 3.1 innings of relief. But he is also not expected to do as well for the entire season.
At the plate the best performance came from the Cubs’ Darwin Barney, who was 3 for 10 with a run scored. But Barney has suffered in his backup role, which gives him relatively few plate appearances, and his season batting average is just .153 with 4 rbis and 7 walks in 59 at bats.
Two Mormon players remain on the DL. Bryce Harper is on the 15-day DL with an injured thumb, and is expected to be out until at least July. Josh Johnson is on the 60-day DL following Tommy John surgery and is not expected to return to the majors this year.
