Brugman making a mark: Minors Update 30 July 2013
Former BYU Cougar Jaycob Brugman, who was drafted in the 17th round this past summer, is starting to make his mark in the New York-Penn League. After a slow start, Brugman’s stats are improving, and this past week he was stellar, hitting 9 for 27, scoring 3 times and earning 4 rbis.
This week he also reached the top of the league stats, when his 22 rbis reached the top ten.
Brugman isn’t the only draftee from BYU who is doing well. Adam Law continues to tear up the Arizona League, with a .380 average and league-leading stats in runs scored and stolen bases. His performance has been strong long enough that it doesn’t seem like a fluke. I have to wonder how long the Dodgers will wait to move Law up a level.
Among pitchers another recent draftee, Adam Miller, had a strong week, despite taking a loss. Miller didn’t give up a single earned run in his 7 innings of work, but errors led to 3 unearned runs, leading to the loss. Miller’s season era stands at 3.58 over more than 27 innings. He also has 23 strike outs and just 6 walks so far. We also saw strong performances from Nik Turley, whose era is down to about 4, and Matt Neil, who was recently moved back down to the AA Eastern League from the PCL and promptly demonstrated his ability to easily handle the AA level.
Mitch Maier remains on the DL, while the Oakland A’s Adam Rosales was promoted back to the majors from AAA Sacramento. And Mitch Talbot pitched 3 innings of rehab in the rookie Gulf Coast League on the way back to the PCL New Orleans Zephyrs.
